Buffelshoek Trust Scouts

The Buffelshoek Trust is running a scouting programme with Scouts South Africa in four villages in the Manyeleti district of Bushbuckridge. This initiative is a direct result of the energy and enthusiasm for environmental and social sustainability in the region. Scouting actively engages and supports young people in their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to society. This is achieved through learning-by-doing approaches that brings together values of leadership, team-work, self-motivation, commitment and perseverance.
70 Cubs, 45 Scouts and six Leader volunteers from the Utah and Dixie Youth Centre are currently participating in the initiative. The scouting content covers major environmental and social challenges such as first aid, global warming, HIV Aids prevention, responsible citizenship and entrepreneurship to name a few.

Scouting indoor and outdoor activities include:

  • Bush Camping
  • Sporting events in soccer, tennis and Frisbee
  • Badge hand-out ceremonies
  • Trails and hiking in the bush
  • Community service

One child scout, struggling at home with a disabled mother, claimed to be very inspired by the group and felt the initiative had made a difference to living at home. She had this to say about the scouting group –

“I feel like I belong in this group – I am very appreciated”

Both the parents and the children are involved in the training and one parent had this to say about the initiative thus far –

“Scouting South Africa is having a huge positive impact in our community, I feel empowered, valued and hopeful.”

A very big thank you goes to MixTelematics for their financial support for this initiative. The Trust is looking to raise money for the current scouting groups to have camping gear and equipment to run camps in and around the natural environmental of their own communities.
