Feeding

Lack of food has an impact on individuals being able to function optimally. In an impoverished community, learners often arrive at school without having had breakfast. Breakfast has been proven to be the most important meal to trigger one’s metabolism. Without this, learners are unable to benefit from the learning offered at school.

The Tiger Brands sponsored feeding scheme caters for over 3000 learners and provides a much-appreciated lifeline for those receiving it. Attendance and academic results have improved in the schools at which this project has been implemented.

Clinic

The levels of malnutrition, untreated tuberculosis and malaria as well as the number of deaths from diarrhoea are acute. In addition, there are high levels of teenage pregnancy and little education regarding HIV/AIDS. A health care facility will assist with the prevention and treatment of these and other health issues benefitting approximately 50 000 people.

The Trust has already secured some funding, in cash and commitments towards the construction of a clinic that will meet the needs of community members in this impoverished region. We have received commitment from the Department of Health in Mpumalanga to manage the operations for this facility post-completion and the plans for the facility are currently being finalised.

It is envisaged that in time, this facility will grow to become a fully-functional hospital facility to include outreach programs and become a benchmark rural teaching facility.
